Jaswand is the hibiscus — the flower Ganpati is offered above all others — and it is worked right through this idol as a beaded pink-and-green garland border running around the turban, the shoulders, and the hem. The pheta itself is pearl-white with a gold fan; the drape is iridescent cream; the dhoti falls in saffron and apricot folds over a magenta cushion. A ruby-and-pearl pendant sits at the chest, a green stone rests at the base, and the mushak looks out from the front edge.
Eighteen inches of hand-moulded shadu mitti, made in Pen and finished slowly — the garland work alone takes an artisan the better part of a day.
None of it is plaster. Immerse it, and the clay lets go cleanly, which is why these idols are the ones councils and community groups across Australia are comfortable with.
