The turban does the talking: green, crimson and gold silk wound into a Peshwai pheta, finished with a pleated fan, a pearl string and a single white feather. Beneath it, a red brocade jacket opens over a royal-blue dhoti printed with gold booti and hemmed in zari. He sits on a violet cushion above a carved copper base, with a small white mushak marked in red at the corner.
Feta idols like this one are the pride of Pen's workshops — the clay is moulded and cured first, then dressed by hand, one length of fabric at a time. The body underneath is shadu mitti, the same natural clay Ganpati murtis were made from long before plaster arrived.
Which means visarjan works as it should. The clay softens, disperses, and is gone, without leaving anything in the water that shouldn't be there.
