The crown is the story here — a domed mukut encrusted with crystal and set with a single rose gemstone at its centre, the kind of headpiece you see on a mandal Ganpati in Pune. Below it, a violet shawl slips over one shoulder onto a marigold dhoti gathered at the waist with a teal sash. An Om is painted into the open right palm and again on the forehead, and a small grey mushak sits at the edge of the bronze-toned pedestal.
At 22 inches, this is one of the largest murtis in the collection, and the scale shows in the detail — the beadwork on the necklaces, the ridges of the trunk, the tiny toenails. It is built from pure shadu mitti in the workshops of Pen, where the moulds, the drying racks and the painting benches have barely changed in three generations.
Shadu mitti behaves the way clay is meant to. Lower the idol into water at visarjan, and it dissolves quietly- no chemical residue, no fragments left in the river.
